Personal style accumulates -- while watching “Breakfast at Tiffany's” or studying that cool, favorite aunt. For me, everything sped up a few years ago during a visit home, when I found a red Revlon lipstick in my childhood bathroom.
Trying on the mysterious lippie felt subversive, like wearing a man's suit. It must have been left by a “local” friend, as we called the native Texans around us. I'd never seen an Indian girl sport anything but our one approved color, burgundy. (Why burgundy? I can only guess because it pairs well with the milky skin tones so many Indians aspire to have.)
I loved my face set off by firetruck red. If anything, my dark skin –- which I liked to keep bare -- seemed to make more of a statement.
After that, colors opened up to me. Yellow eye pencil, coral lip gloss. I discovered pastel pink blush, which makes me look nicely wild, like I've just stumbled out of the desert. Dark-skinned style icons also emerged, clad in color: Solange Knowles, M.I.A., and the great new Hollywood beauty, Lupita Nyong'o.
Below, some tips I've collected on how to enjoy your beauty. The biggest one: Experiment. It's a colorful world.
1. Liquid liner isn't omnipotent.
After polling a few friends, I realized -- this is a divisive issue! Some insist black eyeliner is a must for Indian girls. I'd like to propose the opposite: I like mascara with no liner, combined with a shimmery white shadow. I find it keeps my eyes looking bright even through a long day, and makes eyeliner a distinct nighttime look. A colored eye pencil, however, is lovely during the day because of the matte effect. And dark skin can really take all shades: Yellows, blues, greens and browns.
At night, kajal, aka Indian liner, makes for a sultry, earthy look (available at Indian stores or in beauty shops in a translated version, as kohl pencils). One girlfriend pointed out that smudging regular liner creates a similar effect.
Don't be afraid of a simple eye though, especially if you're wearing a standout lipstick. The Indian aesthetic is to go all out -- painted face, topped off with earrings, a necklace and two arms worth of bracelets. That's great if you're starring in a Bollywood movie, but to create drama at close quarters, contrast is key.
2. Make your brows pop with an optical illusion.
A trick I love -- echoed by one of the friends I polled -- is to dab a touch of white shadow just under the arch of the brow. Particularly on dark skin, this sets off a dramatic brow.
Sephora sells a great, fool-proof eyeshadow kit by Too Faced Cosmetics that has taught me how to achieve the mythic "smokey eye" -- which can be magical on darker skin.
3. More importantly, work with your brows, not against them.
Indians love our high-octane decimators, whether it's threading, waxing or zapping everything in sight. But I've found that putting myself in others' hands always leads to anemic brows. And this strikes me as silly. We tend to be blessed with naturally bold brows. We should work with them, not against them!
Of course, you can be your own worst enemy if you're not careful. I developed an overzealous tweezing habit in college brought on by procrastination (just one laaast pluck before I bang out a brilliant thesis!) that I thankfully kicked. These days, I tweeze those odd stray hairs and trim the tops of my longer hairs with manicure scissors for a WSJ-approved, bold-but-groomed brow.
4. What you do is not as critical as how often you do it.
It is our birthright to believe in supposedly magical home remedies. Turmeric, yogurt, oatmeal, honey, coconut oil -- like many Indian women I have worn all of these delicious food items on my head region. Do they change lives? In mine, I've found that a sense of well-being and discipline do more. Adopt a routine you can manage, don't stress too much about it, and your skin and hair will thank you.
5. Find your signature hair and stick with it.
Once again, less is more for me. I invest in paraben-free shampoos, and don't use conditioner because it weighs down my hair. Every now and then, I follow received Indian wisdom and condition my hair with coconut oil (told you so), letting it sit for as many hours as I can stand before washing it out. Who knows what long-term effects, if any, this leads to, but in cold months, it soothes a dry scalp. One friend swears by yogurt as a leave-in conditioner.
The most transformative thing though, is to identify a cut that works for your face and your lifestyle. Landing on my favorites for myself -- a jagged bob, or when long, an unlayered cut -- has simplified my life. Another destresser: Choosing not to color my greys, which trend early in my family. If you keep your hair healthy, silver on black can be stunning.
6. Don't try to lighten your skin with makeup.
The right foundation is like the holy grail, in that it's very hard to find. My personal preference is to put nothing on my face except, occasionally, a smudge of blush. I love The Multiple stick by NARS in Riviera, which doubles as blush or lipstick.
If you are going to wear a base, take time to find the shade that matches your complexion (which I guarantee is more complex than "very fair" or "dark"). Do not try to lighten your skin with makeup (or bleach, or anything). Not only does it look odd, it's entirely unnecessary. Dark skin is a generous canvas -- you can wear prints, the brightest white and every color on the planet. More importantly, you woke up like this!
7. And, of course, bag a red lipstick.
The revival of hot spectrum shades is a wonderful thing. These babies are basically made for us, and there are so many to choose from. NARS makes a great orangey-red lip color that works well in the daytime (Heat Wave). I also love Burt's Bees chapsticks for hydration with a hint of color. For a bolder look at night, I like to cut whatever I'm wearing with my old faithful, the red Revlon lipstick that snuck up on me.

Moisturize your face for a smooth appearance and an even skin tone. Amidst working extensively on the face alone, do not forget to moisturize using your fingertips by rubbing well in a circular and gentle motion. You could even use a tinted moisturizer.

A foundation with a matte finish would be a good option as well. A foundation with SPF will give your face an undesirable ‘flash’ effect in photographs, so it’s better to avoid it. Take a blush brush, preferably angular, and apply with strokes on to the sides of the chin, but not on the center. Suck your cheeks in and use some bronzer on the top part of the contours, near to the ear, in light strokes. But make sure it is not along the entire length of the contour.

When the time actually arrives, a vast number of things have to be prepared and executed. One of these is choosing the perfect wedding makeup look. Doing this requires several steps, such as prepping your skin so it will look radiant, deciding who will do your makeup, and allotting time for a trial-run application (or two). It also involves learning how to properly apply makeup that's best suited to your complexion. Start now by learning the ins and outs of achieving your end goal – a glowing face to match you, the blushing bride.

- Prep your skin. Whether you’re doing your makeup yourself or not, the day of your wedding, wash your face and use a light moisturizer. Whatever your routine has been, now is not the time to change it. If you exfoliate, however, stay away from a harsh scrub and opt instead for a gentle exfoliating cleanser. If you have a blemish, dab some Visine on it but otherwise leave it alone. Your focus should be on having the clean and soft palette your makeup needs to achieve natural-looking, beautiful skin.

- Let your skin tone and undertone guide your makeup color choices. While there are specific skin types (identified from 1-6) for dermatological purposes[1], makeup companies use their own terminology to describe their makeup colors along the continuum of skin tone. And they aren’t particularly consistent at that. For example, one company might call its lightest foundation “ivory” while another calls the same color “fair.” Thus, in thinking about colors that match your skin tone, it’s best to first think broadly in terms of the range from "fair" to "medium" to "deep."[2]
- Your skin’s undertones – cool or warm – are also a factor when choosing both matching and complementary colors.
- You can determine your undertone with a quick trick. Hold a piece of silver and a piece of gold jewelry to the back of your hand. If the gold seems to melt away, you have a warm undertone. If the silver does, you have a cool undertone.[3]

- Know that primer is required. Between the time you begin applying your makeup and the time you say goodbye to your guests, a lot will have happened. Using a primer before you apply your makeup will help ensure it holds up through the dancing, crying and toasting. You’ll likely still need occasional touch-ups, but they’ll be much less frequent. Additionally, a primer will help smooth fine lines and wrinkles and disguise open pores.

- Apply foundation next. Often people think concealer goes on before foundation, but the experts beg to differ.[7][8] After you’ve put on the primer, allow it time to dry or set. One of the biggest mistakes you can make when applying makeup is not giving each step time to dry. If needed, turn your hair dryer on its coolest setting and wave it back and forth across your face before moving from one step to the next.[9]
- If you have a cool undertone, look for foundation that has a rosier, redder or blue base.
- If you have a warm undertone, use a foundation with a yellow or golden base.
- To determine if the shade is right, dip a Q-tip in the foundation and apply it to the center of your lower jawline. If it vanishes, it’s the right one![10]
- Apply foundation in thin layers, starting from the middle of your face and blending outward using a foundation brush. You don’t want any visible lines, so pay close attention to blending beneath your jaw and on your neck.

Add concealer where needed. Whereas foundation is designed to even skin tone, concealers are designed to hide things, like blemishes and dark circles under your eyes. If you were to apply it before your foundation, you’d rub much of it away while working the foundation into your skin. To cover red areas or dark circles, use a concealer brush to dot a liquid concealer the same shade or one shade lighter than your skin tone along trouble areas. Then pat the brush against your skin to spread the concealer. If it’s not blended enough, dip the tip of a makeup sponge in water and work the concealer outward.[12][13]
To hide a blemish, put foundation on it first, then apply concealer before setting it with powder. If you can still see it, add more concealer and powder. Make sure you pat the concealer on the blemish. Don’t rub.[14]

Apply highlighter, but go easy on it. Highlighter isn’t always in everyone’s makeup bag, but its purpose is to make certain facial features like eyes appear larger and to add both glow and a youthful dewy look. Using too much, or a formulation with sparkle or glitter, is a recipe for photo disaster, so tread lightly. They come in both liquid and powder forms.
If you use a liquid, dab it on with a brush after your foundation in the shape of a check mark. Start near your inner eye, go down at a slight angle toward your nostril and then up your cheekbone, blending toward your temple. Do the same above your brows, down the center of your nose, the center of your forehead and your chin.
If you’re using a powder highlighter, use it after you powder and brush it under your brows, lightly in the corner of your eyes and on the tops of your cheekbones. Don’t use powder highlighter under your eyes or over your mouth or you’ll look sweaty in photos.[15]

Makeup artist Kapil Bhalla shares some tricks that every girl must be aware of.
- Use an eyelash curler before applying mascara to make your eyes look bigger and brighter. - Clean the mascara wand completely using tissue paper before application to avoid any clumps and there will still be enough mascara to separate the lashes. - Always use cooling eye drops like Ikul or Clearine before doing eye make up to make the white of the eyes look whiter. - A flesh-coloured eye pencil used in the waterline can cleverly make the eyes look bigger. - Black kohl used in the waterline actually defines the eyes like nothing else can. Use it in the night before sleeping and wash off in the morning.
The residue will make your eyes look their sexiest best. - Tweezers any day win over threading. You will discover your natural arch soon if you stop threading the top of the eye brows and tweeze just the bottom. - Increasing the gap of eyebrows between the eyes even by a few millimetres will give you a wide eyed look. - Clear mascara helps in keeping the eyebrows in place. - Mix a few drops of your liquid foundation in your daily moisturiser to make your very own tinted moisturiser. - Smokey eyes look best with pale lips, and dark lips need no eye make up except mascara or an eyeliner. -

When you smile, the area of your cheek that rises up is your blush area, irrespective of your face shape. - Moisten your lips with lip balm and then rub with tissue after a few minutes to take off dead skin. This will keep lipstick lasting much longer. - For Indian skin, look for rich jewel tones in eye make up. You can never go wrong with a sapphire blue vs a powder blue or an emerald green vs a pale green. Silver, gold, pewter, rust, copper bronze are your best bets too. - Try using an eyebrow powder to fill in the brows instead of an eye brow pencil to avoid looking like a drag queen. - Orange tones in make up are more flattering on dusky skin tones, and pink tones will work on fair skin tones. - Mixing some gold dust powder into your body cream will make your skin glow like a healthy beach tan. - Do not always match eye make up with your wardrobe. Nails are a better option to match and will make you look much cooler.

A woman’s wedding day is something most dream of, and even plan, from the time they were little girls swinging on the playground. When the time actually arrives, a vast number of things have to be prepared and executed. One of these is choosing the perfect wedding makeup look. Doing this requires several steps, such as prepping your skin so it will look radiant, deciding who will do your makeup, and allotting time for a trial-run application (or two). It also involves learning how to properly apply makeup that's best suited to your complexion. Let your skin tone and undertone guide your makeup color choices. While there are specific skin types (identified from 1-6) for dermatological purposes[1], makeup companies use their own terminology to describe their makeup colors along the continuum of skin tone. And they aren’t particularly consistent at that. For example, one company might call its lightest foundation “ivory” while another calls the same color “fair.” Thus, in thinking about colors that match your skin tone, it’s best to first think broadly in terms of the range from "fair" to "medium" to "deep."[2]
Your skin’s undertones – cool or warm – are also a factor when choosing both matching and complementary colors.
You can determine your undertone with a quick trick. Hold a piece of silver and a piece of gold jewelry to the back of your hand. If the gold seems to melt away, you have a warm undertone. If the silver does, you have a cool undertone.[3]

Know that primer is required. Between the time you begin applying your makeup and the time you say goodbye to your guests, a lot will have happened. Using a primer before you apply your makeup will help ensure it holds up through the dancing, crying and toasting. You’ll likely still need occasional touch-ups, but they’ll be much less frequent. Additionally, a primer will help smooth fine lines and wrinkles and disguise open pores.

Apply foundation next. Often people think concealer goes on before foundation, but the experts beg to differ.[7][8] After you’ve put on the primer, allow it time to dry or set. One of the biggest mistakes you can make when applying makeup is not giving each step time to dry. If you have a cool undertone, look for foundation that has a rosier, redder or blue base.

Apply foundation in thin layers, starting from the middle of your face and blending outward using a foundation brush. You don’t want any visible lines, so pay close attention to blending beneath your jaw and on your neck.

Add concealer where needed. Whereas foundation is designed to even skin tone, concealers are designed to hide things, like blemishes and dark circles under your eyes. If you were to apply it before your foundation, you’d rub much of it away while working the foundation into your skin. To cover red areas or dark circles, use a concealer brush to dot a liquid concealer the same shade or one shade lighter than your skin tone along trouble areas. Then pat the brush against your skin to spread the concealer. If it’s not blended enough, dip the tip of a makeup sponge in water and work the concealer outward.[12][13]
To hide a blemish, put foundation on it first, then apply concealer before setting it with powder. If you can still see it, add more concealer and powder. Make sure you pat the concealer on the blemish. Don’t rub.[14]

Apply highlighter, but go easy on it. Highlighter isn’t always in everyone’s makeup bag, but its purpose is to make certain facial features like eyes appear larger and to add both glow and a youthful dewy look. Using too much, or a formulation with sparkle or glitter, is a recipe for photo disaster, so tread lightly. They come in both liquid and powder forms.
If you use a liquid, dab it on with a brush after your foundation in the shape of a check mark. Start near your inner eye, go down at a slight angle toward your nostril and then up your cheekbone, blending toward your temple. Do the same above your brows, down the center of your nose, the center of your forehead and your chin.
If you’re using a powder highlighter, use it after you powder and brush it under your brows, lightly in the corner of your eyes and on the tops of your cheekbones. Don’t use powder highlighter under your eyes or over your mouth or you’ll look sweaty in photos.[15]

Set your base and then contour. Really, you have two choices next. You can use a cream blush rather than a powder blush or set your base with powder. If you opt to use a powder blush, first use a translucent powder to set your base and control shine. Powder is one of those times when less is absolutely more. You’re going for luminous, not laden down. Use a medium-sized brush to dust lightly over your forehead, the sides of your nose and on your chin.
Then use a powder bronzer that’s just a shade or two darker than your foundation and brush it in the shape of a 3 on both sides of your face.

Blush gently. Whether you’re using a cream blush prior to your powder or a powder blush after, go lightly with the blush. You can always add more. Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards and out toward your hairline. You don’t want a pink nose, so don’t brush it there. If you have fair skin with cool undertones, colors like soft rose or baby pink with hints of mocha or beige will look nice.
If you have fair skin with warm undertones, go for golden apricot or a light peach with a bit of pink.
If you have medium skin with cool undertones, try cranberry, light raspberry or rosy pink.
If you have medium skin with warm undertones, look for soft coral with hints of brown or sunkissed apricot.
If you have deep skin with cool undertones, blush on shades of plum, grape and raspberry.

Bring color to your eyes with shadow and liner. Wedding experts generally don't recommend a darkly dramatic eye, opting instead to use eye liners in colors other than black, paler or muted eye shadows complementary to your eye color, and highlighters to make eyes look large. Try brown, grey, and green eyeliners and apply it on both your top and bottom eyelids to draw attention to your eyes. Using a cream eye shadow will last longer and is best used on the lids of your eye while a powder is best in the crease of your eye. Use a powder highlighter in the corners of your eyes and under your brow.
As for colors, try bronze shades if you have green eyes, mocha if your eyes are hazel, navy and dark brown for blue eyes, and purples and grays for brown eyes.
